What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files containing information that are stored on your computer or device by your web browser when you visit a website. Cookies may be created by the website the user is visiting (‘first party cookies’), or may be set by websites other than the one the user is currently visiting (‘third party cookies’).
Cookies are widely used to allow a website to recognise a user’s device, preferences and generally improve the efficiency of a website, as well as observing behavior and compiling aggregate statistics. A common example is an authentication cookie which confirms whether the user is logged in to an account.
Cookies that are erased at the end of your browsing session are known as ‘session cookies’. Other cookies compile longer-term information about a user and their browsing history and will remain on your computer until you erase them or they are erased by your browser at the end of their expiry date (‘persistent cookies’).
Most cookies do not contain information that personally identifies a user, but in some circumstances, this information may be linked with other information we hold to identify you. For information on how ASX handles your personal information please see our Privacy Statement.
The cookies we use on our website can be grouped into the following types:
- Strictly Necessary Cookies (Always Active)
Strictly necessary cookies ensure that our website is able to function properly. They include cookies that help you log in, provide core services and features, help keep our website secure and help us detect fraud or crime. We don’t have to ask for your consent to store these cookies on your browser.
- Performance Cookies
These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.
- Functional Cookies
These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies then some or all of these services may not function properly.
- Targeting Cookies
These cookies are used to collect information about a visitor’s behavior across devices and websites. They are used to allow us to tailor marketing information provided through our partners to audiences who may have an interest in that information and to measure the effectiveness of our advertising. They include third-party cookies placed by our partners who share cookie data with us.
Use of Google Analytics
ASX uses information collected through first party Google Analytics cookies which in conjunction with our web server’s log files allow us to identify unique but anonymous users, together with third party cookies set by Google and YouTube in order to:
- tailor content and advertising to audiences who may have an interest in that information, including re-targeting our advertising based on content viewed on our website and to target segments based on demographics and interest data;
- measure the effectiveness of our advertising; and
- receive aggregated and anonymised statistics on the demographics and the interests of our website visitors.
You can opt-out of Google Analytics being used in your browser by installing the Google Analytics browser add-on.
For more information on data collected by Google, you can visit Google’s website (‘How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services’).
