Indices

In partnership with S&P Dow Jones Indices, ASX provides a range of indices and related products, enabling investors to gain exposure to a region, market sector, asset class or strategy.

Sector indices

Jointly developed by S&P Dow Jones Indices and MSCI, the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS®) sets out 11 standardised industry definitions used by share markets around the world. The ASX adopted GICS in 2002, allowing investors to easily analyse and compare the Australian market and its global peers.

As well as the 11 GICS sectors, the ASX and S&P Dow Jones Indices have also developed five additional sector indices, reflecting the specialised characteristics of the Australian market.

Accumulation Indices

Accumulation indices exist for all of the indices listed above. Accumulation indices assume that dividends are reinvested and so measure both growth and dividend income. Price indices (non-accumulation indices) do not take dividends into account and measure price growth only.

Index data

Indices measure the movement in value of the market or various sectors of the market. They provide a broad outline as to how the market is performing. Standard & Poor's (S&P) calculate many of the indices available over the Australian sharemarket.

S&P/ASX Buy–Write Index (XBW)

The S&P/ASX Buy–Write Index replicates the performance of a rolling buy–write strategy using the S&P/ASX 200 Accumulation Index (XJOAI). It provides ongoing exposure to the ASX 200, with a call option over the S&P/ASX 200 sold each quarter. Each option position is held to expiry, with a new option sold in the next quarterly option series to expire at the next out-of-the-money strike.

S&P/ASX 200 VIX Index (VIX)

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX (A-VIX) is a real-time volatility index that provides investors, financial media, researchers and economists with an insight into investor sentiment and expected levels of market volatility. The index tracks S&P/ASX 200 index option prices as a means of monitoring anticipated levels of near-term volatility in the Australian equity market.
